Passport and Visa

Passport Validity

  • Your U.S. passport must have at least 6 months of validity beyond your return date, and at least one blank page for entry/exit stamps Travel.state.gov.

Visa Requirements

  • Citizens of certain countries benefit from visa-free entry or may obtain a visa on arrival (e.g. some ECOWAS nationals, post-2025 additions like Colombia, Morocco, etc.) Wikipedia.

Mandatory Entry Requirement

  • Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers aged 9 months and older entering Ghana, with documented proof upon arrival Travel.state.govRustic Pathways.

Recommended & Advisable Vaccinations

According to CDC and other health authorities:

  • Recommended: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Polio, Tdap (tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis), MMR, Influenza, COVID-19 (if eligible), Rabies, Pneumonia, Chickenpox/Shingles Passport Health.

  • Malaria prophylaxis is strongly advised—Ghana has widespread transmission, and chloroquine-resistant strains; consult a travel health specialist Passport Healtheducationabroad.isp.msu.edu.

  • Other precautions: Take measures against dengue, Lassa fever, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and general travelers’ illnesses through safer food, clean water, and bug protection measures Passport Health.

Travel Checklist for Ghana (from the U.S.)

✅ Travel Documents

  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond travel dates, with at least 2 blank pages).

  • Ghana visa (apply online or through the Ghana Embassy/Consulate before travel).

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (required for entry).

  • Copies of passport, visa, vaccination card, and travel insurance (keep digital + paper copies).

 

💉 Health & Safety

  • Required immunizations: Yellow Fever.

  • Recommended immunizations: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, MMR, Tdap, Polio booster.

  • Malaria prevention: prescription meds (e.g., Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam).

  • Travel health kit: mosquito repellent (30–50% DEET), sunscreen, hand sanitizer, first aid kit, any personal prescriptions.

 

💵 Money & Finances

  • Notify bank/credit card company of travel dates.

  • Bring some USD cash (new, crisp bills—$50s or $100s preferred for best exchange rate).

  • Plan to use cash (Ghanaian Cedi, GHS) for most expenses. ATMs available in cities.

  • Consider a money belt or crossbody bag for security.

 

📱 Communication & Connectivity

  • Unlock phone for local SIM card purchase (MTN is common in Ghana).

  • Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me).

  • Save emergency contacts, embassy info, and hotel addresses offline.

 

🧳 Packing Essentials

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton/linen).

  • Conservative outfits (for cultural sensitivity, especially at religious or rural sites).

  • Comfortable walking shoes & sandals.

  • Rain jacket or umbrella (rainy season: Apr–Jun & Sept–Nov).

  • Universal power adapter (Ghana uses Type D & G plugs, 230V).

  • Reusable water bottle + water purification tablets/filters.

  • Travel pillow, eye mask, earplugs (for long flights).

 

🛂 Arrival in Ghana

  • Complete entry card (provided on plane/at airport).

  • Show passport, visa, Yellow Fever card at immigration.

  • Have hotel address & contact info ready for customs.

  • Arrange reliable transportation from airport (pre-booked taxi, hotel shuttle, or trusted driver).

 

🌍 Other Good-To-Haves

  • Travel insurance (medical + trip coverage).

  • Copies of important documents stored securely online.

  • Small gifts for hosts (if visiting friends/family).

  • Snacks for travel days (energy bars, nuts).

  • Cultural prep: learn greetings in Twi or Ga (local languages).
